Refugee Festival 2006

Refugee Week is a nation-wide programme of arts, cultural, and educational events that celebrates cultural diversity and the positive contribution that refugees make to the UK. It promotes understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary. It is a chance to deliver positive educational messages that counter fear, ignorance and the negative stereotyping of refugees, and a unique opportunity to tell people about the enormous economic and cultural contribution that refugees make to British society. Refugee Week involves a range of organisations including Amnesty International UK, The Refugee Council, The Arts Council of England, Refugee Action, Save the Children and United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Pukaar is proud to celebrate Refugee Week as an annual festival every year. Pukaar kick started this event in 2004 by organising Refugee Dinner and Dance in Southampton. See Pictures. The event was attended by the chief constable of Hampshire Police, Paul Kernaghan; superintendent of Southampton BCU, Paul

Stickler; Mayor of Southampton, Parvin Damani; and Ahmded Sasso, diverse community officer Hampshire constabulary. The event was also attened by voluntary organisations such as CLEAR project and Refugee Action. A total of 150 refugees from various parts of the world (Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc) attended this event and got the opportunity to mix freely and integrate themselves in a british society. The event also saw Hamid Samy (Race for Justice), launch his book titled "Welcome to Britain". The party was a great success with music from all over the world being played live.

In 2005, Pukaar organised a multicultural festival in celebration of this event. Read More. See Pictures!
