Multicultural Event for Portsmouth Youth
   Naomi Fraser, 4th Dec 2005

Pukaar was proud to be invited to support the Portsmouth Youth Interfaith Forum (PYIFF) put on their first event for the City's young people, held in the newly opened John Pounds Community Centre. On 3rd December 2005 PYIFF invited Pukaar to bring multi-cultural music and performance to their event. The Pukaar team provided lots of activities for the PYIFF young people, including workshops in Bollywood dancing, British community drama, DJing and Asian instruments.

The event was opened at midday by The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councilor Robin Sparshatt and closed by Portsmouth MP Sarah McCarthy followed by one of Pukaar's most lively and friendly performances. As soon as Romail started singing not a single person was left sitting for the last 1½ hours. Twice all on the dance floor, young and old, joined hands to dance together, first to a Bhangra version of "5,6,7,8" and later to Romail Gulzar's (Pukaar Founding Director) song "Galasian Charr". The evening proved that music really can break down the barriers and literally join individuals together no matter their age, religion or ethnicity!
