Christmas Carols for Southampton YMCA
   Naomi Fraser, 20th Dec 2005

On 19th December 2005 Pukaar joined up with the Salvation Army Youth Band to put on a modern multi-cultural carol concert - traditional brass meeting Asian Bhangra!

The concert was attended by a broad cross section of individuals including, young YMCA residents, Councillor Edwina Cooke - Mayor of Southampton, Rt Revd Paul Butler - Bishop of Southampton and staff of several voluntary organisations. If it was standard old English carols the audience was seeking, then they got them….but with a bangra slant to some of the tunes! The Youth Band warmed up the crowd with O Little Town of Bethlehem followed by a reading from a YMCA resident then Pukaar jumped in with their very special variation of Hark the Herold Angels Sing. Along with further readings, carols and a short sermon from City Life Church, Pukaar performed a medley of their work encouraging the audience to join in dancing, clapping and singing in the usual Pukaar style. This included Romail singing "Meethiya Meethiya" and Martin singing "Mrs Hardy" from Pukaar's new Christmas Album, Peace on Earth. The event was rounded off with a blessing from the Bishop followed by YMCA's excellent mulled wine and hot mince pies.
